OL PEJETA:
This is a must visit. Ol pejeta is the home of the remaining 2 last northern white rhinos in the world. It is also a place to see many black rhinos which are around 165 species in total, the big fives along with other wildlife.
Ol pejeta conversancy;-This is the heaven on earth for the rhinos.
Why visit this place;
1.RHINO- ol pejeta is known as a rhino sanctuary, this is the place to meet the northern white rhinos and a large population of the black rhinos, hence the the place to be rhino conservation destination.
In this place you’ll get a chance to visit the only blind rhino called Baraka, he was one of the first rhinos to be born on the plains of Ol pejeta. He lost his sight a long time ago at his young age, but sespite that he lives a life with incredible spirit, enjoying mud baths, peaceful naps and inspiring people who visit him with his determination. This year November he will be turning 31 years old.
Different types of Rhinos found in Ol pejeta
a}Sudan– sudan was born in Shambe, southern sudan in 1973. At the age of 2years old, he was taken to Drur Kra Love 200 in the Czesh Republic. While he was there he sired two calves, Nabire and Najin. He later died in 2018.
b}Najin-This one takes after her dad, Sudan. She is quiet, relaxed adores tummy rubs and often . she rolls over on her back to enjoy them properly. She likes mud baths but insn’t very good at them, her legs wont allow her to sink down properly. She is accommodating and welcoming. She becomes dangerous when scared, she dislikes loud bangs, born in 1989.
c}Suni– He was Najin’s half brother because they shared a mother -Nasimu-who was captured in Uganda and later taken to Czesh Republic this was ever the first Northern White Rhino born in captivity. He had a tendency to charge and oppose anything that appears to be a threat to him-born in 1980 and died in in 2014.
d}Northern White Rhinos-Northen white rhino stands as the most critically endangered rhinoceros species on earth. These majestic creatures have faced relentless hunting for their horns. Sadly the passing of Sudan, the last male northern white Rhino on the planet in march 2018, this sub-species is currently functionally extinct
e} Fatu– Shared a father with Suni- Saut-who was originally from Sudan. She was a bad temper and can be unpredictable sometimes. When upset she will show sudden aggression and won’t take any nonsense from anyone. She like sleeping on ditches with her snout resting on the ground next to her snoring mother Najin, they both enjoy the company of the northern White Rhino they live with. Born in 2000.
2. CHIMPANZEES-guests visit chimpanzee sanctuary and get to learn about these fascinating animals. They are categorized into 2 groups, one group consists of 17 chimpanzees and the other group consists of 15 chimpanzees. The sanctuary is famous for being the only place in Kenya where you will find the non-indigeous chimpanzees. The Sanctuary also provide a safe for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees.
3. THE BIG FIVES-this conservancy is the home of all members of the big fives e.g- Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo and also other African wildlife like antelopes, zebras, giraffes, warthogs…
4. DIVERSE ECOSYSTEM-the Ol pejeta conservancy is a diverse ecosystem which is characterized by bushland, grasslands and riverine habitats thus supporting the high density of wildlife such as largest population of black rhinos in Kenya and the last 2 Northern Rhinos.
