Lake Nakuru is one of the alkaline lakes found in the Great Rift Valley and has been a National Park since the pre-independence period. It is actually not that large in size, millions of flamingoes have been seen on the Lake, feeding on the algae that do well in its warm waters. These great flocks wade through the shallow waters, transforming the entire lake into a shimmering shade of pink.
Lake Nakuru is a great destination to visit in search for two of the big 5 you often not found in most parks. Home to the largest population of rhinos in the country, who graze in the early morning on the sweet vegetation on the lake's edge. Both Black and White Rhino are present openly grazing, it makes spotting them much easier. It is also a good place for trying to see much decorated leopard, undoubtedly the most difficult of the big 5 to spot. Adding to the list of rare animals in the park is the Rothschild giraffes, an endangered species introduced in the in the post colonial era to help protect its future. There are 2 types of resident flamingos, pelicans and cormorants on the lake as well as 400 other species of birds.
